Character.AI review: what it is, who it's for
Millions of user-made characters to talk to for free - a fictional villain, a language tutor, a friend.
Checked September 14, 2026 · character.ai
Character.AI is less a companion app and more a library of personalities. Users build characters - anime leads, historical figures, tutors, 'your supportive best friend' - and anyone can chat with them. The writing quality is the best of the free options and the roleplay is deep. It runs on the web and in apps. Free is generous; the paid c.ai+ tier gets you faster replies and priority access when it's busy. Explicit content is filtered out, firmly.
The good part
Breadth. Whatever you're in the mood for, someone's built it. You can also make your own character in five minutes with a description and a few example lines, and it's surprisingly good at staying in character over long chats.
The catch
The filter. Anything sexual gets blocked mid-sentence, and it sometimes trips on things that aren't sexual at all. If you're an adult who wants an unfiltered companion, this isn't it, and fighting the filter is a waste of an evening. Go to Nomi or Kindroid instead.
Memory across sessions is weaker than Replika's. It's built for scenes, not for a relationship that remembers your birthday.
- Huge range of characters, all free
- Best writing quality among the free companions
- Make your own character in minutes
- Strict filter that also blocks harmless things
- Weaker long-term memory than dedicated companions
- Busy periods mean queues without c.ai+
