Character.AI is less a companion app and more a library of personalities. Users build characters - anime leads, historical figures, tutors, 'your supportive best friend' - and anyone can chat with them. The writing quality is the best of the free options and the roleplay is deep. It runs on the web and in apps. Free is generous; the paid c.ai+ tier gets you faster replies and priority access when it's busy. Explicit content is filtered out, firmly.
What Character.AI is
Character.AI is not one companion but millions of them: user-made characters spanning fiction, history, celebrities, tutors and original creations, each with a personality and, often, a voice. You can chat or talk by voice, and you can build your own character without code and share it. Free versus c.ai+
The app is free to use. The App Store lists Character.AI+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and a Character.AI Lite tier at $2.49 and $4.99. The public pages don't spell out the exact differences, so read the in-app comparison before subscribing; historically the paid tier has been about priority access and faster responses rather than different content.
Charms
Character.AI has an in-app currency called Charms. Its Charms terms describe two ways to get them: earn them through quests and activities, or buy packs, which the App Store lists from $0.99 to $49.99. Two clauses matter. Earned Charms are never refundable. Purchased Charms are final and non-refundable except where the law requires, and once credited you lose any cooling-off rights to the extent the law allows. If you buy through Apple or Google, their refund rules apply instead.
Moderation and safety
