It's quick, casual, and a bit chaotic - quality depends on who built the bot. The free tier has a daily message limit; a subscription removes it. The filtering is looser than Character.AI but it's not an explicit app, and it's rated for adults on the app stores. Think of it as the TikTok of AI chat: fast, disposable, sometimes fun.
What Chai is
Chai is a character-chat app: a large catalogue of AI characters, from originals to celebrities and fictional figures, that you talk to in the app. It's mobile-first, rated 18+ on the App Store, and made by Chai Research Corp. The company's site is short on product detail and long on infrastructure: it announces over $55 million raised and a 1.4 exaflop compute cluster, which tells you the priority is model capacity rather than a polished consumer brochure.
Free, Premium, Ultra
The app is free to download and use, with limits; the App Store listing does not spell them out, and user reviews on the listing mention message limits and ads on the free tier. The in-app purchases Apple lists are: Premium at $13.99 a month, a Premium Membership at $9.99, Premium annual at $134.99, Ultra at $19.99 a week or $29.99 a month, and a 200 Pieces pack at $2.79 (Pieces are the in-app currency). Ultra is the tier with the higher price and presumably the higher limits; the exact difference is shown in the app.
What the company publishes
Not much, by design. The corporate site covers funding and hiring. There is no public pricing page, safety page or moderation policy on the pages we checked. That doesn't mean there is no moderation; it means you're relying on the app and the App Store rating rather than published rules.
Chai against the alternatives
Chai and Character.AI are the same idea. Character.AI publishes terms, a safety page and a currency policy, and its subscription is cheaper; Chai's appeal is the community and characters inside the app. Talkie is a third option with a published FAQ on content rules. Try Character.AI first unless you already know you want Chai's characters.
