Chai review: what it is, who it's for
A phone app for swiping through user-made AI bots when you want something quick and casual.
Checked September 14, 2026 · www.chai-research.com
Chai is a mobile app where you swipe through AI characters made by other users and start chatting with whichever one catches your eye. It's quick, casual, and a bit chaotic - quality depends on who built the bot. The free tier has a daily message limit; a subscription removes it. The filtering is looser than Character.AI but it's not an explicit app, and it's rated for adults on the app stores. Think of it as the TikTok of AI chat: fast, disposable, sometimes fun.
Where it fits
Between Character.AI's polish and the 18+ apps' freedom. The bots are more willing to flirt than on Character.AI, but the app isn't built for explicit roleplay and moderation exists.
The limits
The daily message cap on the free tier is the thing you'll hit first. Memory is short. The app pushes the subscription hard. And because anyone can publish a bot, you'll swipe past a lot of low-effort ones before finding a good one.
Best used for ten minutes of fun rather than a long-term companion.
- Fast, swipe-based, lots of variety
- Looser than Character.AI without being explicit
- Free tier to try it
- Daily message cap on free
- Bot quality is all over the place
- Phone only
