Replika alternatives - better memory, fewer limits, or just cheaper

Six alternatives to Replika for people who want a smarter companion, adult roleplay, a free tier without paid romance, or a character library instead of one friend.

Checked September 14, 2026 · 6 platforms · ranked by fit, not by who pays. How we rank

Replika is where most people start with AI companions, and it's where a lot of them get frustrated. The three usual reasons: it's not very smart, the romantic features are behind a subscription and stay non-explicit, and its memory - decent - is beaten by newer apps. The alternatives are sorted by which of those sent you looking.

Memory and depth: Nomi. It's the app that made Replika feel dated, and it's adults-only, which means it doesn't police romance. Control: Kindroid lets you write the whole personality and edit what it remembers. Range: Character.AI has millions of characters and better writing than Replika, free, with a filter that makes it a poor Replika substitute for romance but a great one for everything else.

Chai and Talkie are the casual end - fine if you wanted Replika for ten minutes of fun rather than a relationship. And 7 Cups is on the list because some people came to Replika for someone to listen, and a trained human listener does that better than any app.

Replika's real strength, for the record, is how safe it is to recommend. If you're picking an app for a teenager or a shared tablet, it's still the answer.

1Nomi

AI companion · 18+18+Free to startAccount requiredweb · iOS · Android

Best for: An adult AI companion with real memory and no filter fights - the one most people settle on.

Better memory, adult content allowed (18+)

Nomi is an AI companion built for adults. It remembers - not just last week, but months back - and it doesn't slam a filter down the moment a conversation gets romantic. You can set it up as a friend, a mentor or a partner, and it's good at staying consistent. It runs on the web and as apps. There's a free tier with a limited number of messages; the subscription removes the limit and adds features like voice and picture sharing.

Good
  • Best memory of any companion app we've tried
  • Adult roleplay allowed, no filter whiplash
  • Web and apps, same account
Not so good
  • Free tier is a trial, not a plan
  • 18+ only
  • Voice and photos need the subscription

2Kindroid

AI companion · 18+18+Free to startAccount requiredweb · iOS · Android

Best for: An unfiltered companion for adults who want to write the personality themselves.

Write the personality yourself, no filter (18+)

Kindroid gives you a blank sheet and a lot of control: you write the backstory, the personality, the way it talks, and it follows. There's no content filter for adults, so it won't refuse a romantic or explicit scene. It has a memory system, voice calls, and group chats with several characters. Free lets you try it; the subscription unlocks the full message allowance and the extras. Runs in a browser and as apps.

Good
  • No filter for adults, and no lectures
  • Editable memory - fix mistakes yourself
  • Voice, images and multi-character chat
Not so good
  • Takes effort to set up well
  • 18+ only
  • Best features need the subscription

3Character.AI

AI companionFree to startAccount optionalweb · iOS · Android

Best for: Millions of user-made characters to talk to for free - a fictional villain, a language tutor, a friend.

Free, huge library, filtered

Character.AI is less a companion app and more a library of personalities. Users build characters - anime leads, historical figures, tutors, 'your supportive best friend' - and anyone can chat with them. The writing quality is the best of the free options and the roleplay is deep. It runs on the web and in apps. Free is generous; the paid c.ai+ tier gets you faster replies and priority access when it's busy. Explicit content is filtered out, firmly.

Good
  • Huge range of characters, all free
  • Best writing quality among the free companions
  • Make your own character in minutes
Not so good
  • Strict filter that also blocks harmless things
  • Weaker long-term memory than dedicated companions
  • Busy periods mean queues without c.ai+

4Chai

AI companionFree to startAccount requirediOS · Android

Best for: A phone app for swiping through user-made AI bots when you want something quick and casual.

Casual, swipe-based, phone-first

Chai is a mobile app where you swipe through AI characters made by other users and start chatting with whichever one catches your eye. It's quick, casual, and a bit chaotic - quality depends on who built the bot. The free tier has a daily message limit; a subscription removes it. The filtering is looser than Character.AI but it's not an explicit app, and it's rated for adults on the app stores. Think of it as the TikTok of AI chat: fast, disposable, sometimes fun.

Good
  • Fast, swipe-based, lots of variety
  • Looser than Character.AI without being explicit
  • Free tier to try it
Not so good
  • Daily message cap on free
  • Bot quality is all over the place
  • Phone only

5Talkie

AI companionFree to startAccount requirediOS · Android · web

Best for: Polished AI characters with voices and a collectible-card feel - fun, not deep.

Voices and a game-like feel

Talkie is a character-chat app with a glossy, game-like presentation: characters have art, voices, and there's a card-collecting layer on top. The conversations are decent and the voices are a nice touch. It's free to use with in-app purchases for cosmetics and extras. Like Character.AI, it's not an adult app. It's a good pick if you want AI chat that feels like a mobile game rather than a text box.

Good
  • Character voices, not just text
  • Free with a generous allowance
  • Game-like presentation that's fun to poke at
Not so good
  • Card and cosmetic purchases everywhere
  • Average memory
  • Not for adult content

67 Cups

Peer supportFree to startAccount requiredweb · iOS · Android

Best for: A free, trained listener when the reason you want to talk is that tonight is hard.

If what you wanted from Replika was someone to listen

7 Cups pairs you with a volunteer listener for an anonymous one-on-one text chat. Listeners aren't therapists - they're trained to listen, which is a different and sometimes more useful thing at 1am. It's free. There are also group support rooms and community forums. If the word for tonight is lonely rather than bored, put this above every random chat site: a random stranger might be kind, a listener is there to be.

Good
  • Free, anonymous, trained volunteer listeners
  • Available around the clock, in many languages
  • Group rooms and forums when one-on-one is too much
Not so good
  • Not therapy, and not for emergencies
  • Quality varies between listeners
  • Account required
