Replika review: what it is, who it's for
A safe-for-work AI companion that remembers your days and checks in - the gentlest place to start.
Checked September 14, 2026 · replika.com
Replika is the best-known AI companion app and the one to try first if the idea feels odd. You create a character, chat with it, and it remembers what you tell it: your job, your dog, that thing you're worried about. It's warm rather than clever. The free tier gives you text chat as a friend; the paid Pro tier unlocks voice calls, romantic relationship modes and more. Romantic content stays non-explicit - Replika is not an adult app.
What it does well
Memory and mood. It brings up things from last week, asks how the interview went, notices when you sound off. For someone who lives alone, that's the value - not the intelligence, the continuity.
What it doesn't do
It's not as sharp as the big general chatbots. Ask it something factual and you'll get a soft, vague answer. It's also not for adult roleplay; the company removed explicit content in 2023 and kept it removed. If that's what you want, the 18+ apps further down this site are the honest answer.
The 3D avatar and augmented reality mode are gimmicks you can ignore. The chat is the product.
- Remembers what you tell it and follows up
- Free text chat; no time limit
- Safe-for-work by design, easy to recommend
- Voice, romance modes and most extras are paid
- Not clever - weak at anything factual
- The avatar and AR features feel dated
