7 Cups pairs you with a volunteer listener for an anonymous one-on-one text chat. Listeners aren't therapists - they're trained to listen, which is a different and sometimes more useful thing at 1am. It's free. There are also group support rooms and community forums. If the word for tonight is lonely rather than bored, put this above every random chat site: a random stranger might be kind, a listener is there to be.

How it works

Create an account (you can stay anonymous), pick 'connect with a listener', and you're matched within minutes. You can browse listeners by what they've been through and their languages. Conversations are text only. There's no camera and nobody is there to flirt.

Limits

Listeners are volunteers with training, not clinicians. They can't diagnose or treat. If you're in crisis, the site points you to emergency lines, and so do we: if you're in immediate danger, call your local emergency number. For the ordinary hard night, though, this is the best free option that exists.

Paid therapy is offered too, but you don't need it to use the listener chat.
