Emerald Chat tries to fix the thing that makes random chat tiring: talking to people you have nothing in common with. You add a few interests, and it leans matches toward people who picked the same ones. It has one-on-one text, one-on-one video and group chat rooms, plus a karma score that rewards people who don't get reported. You can use it without an account, but the account unlocks the matching and keeps your karma.
The karma system
Every user has a karma number. Get reported and it drops; behave and it climbs. Low-karma users get matched with each other, which is a quietly clever way of keeping the worst behaviour in its own corner. It also means a new account starts in the middle, so your first few chats are a mixed bag until you build it up.
Text first, then video
A lot of people here start in text mode, which takes the pressure off. If a conversation is going somewhere, you can move to video. That order is the opposite of Chatroulette, and it suits people who want an actual conversation rather than a face parade.
The paid tier (Emerald Gold) removes ads and adds a gender filter. You don't need it to get real conversations, but the free version shows ads between matches.
