Chatspin review: what it is, who it's for

AR face masks for people who want to chat on camera without showing their whole face.

Chatspin is a random video chat with two things that stand out: face masks and filters. The masks are AR overlays that hide your face while keeping the call live, which makes it easier for shy people to try video chat at all. The filters let you narrow by gender and country. It works in a browser and has phone apps. The basics are free; the gender filter and some extras sit behind a subscription.

The free part is the whole product

Chatspin has run free webcam chat since 2015 and says it covers 180+ countries. The pitch on its own pricing page is unusually direct: "Free isn't a demo." No profiles, no bios: pick who you are, press Start, and you're face to face with someone. A free account by email or Google takes about 30 seconds and exists mainly to save your tokens, streaks and crowns.

The free tier includes something most competitors charge for: 100+ AR face masks so you can stay anonymous on camera without a Plus plan. The shield icon lets you report, block or blur someone instantly.

Tokens and Mystery Boxes

Chatspin has built a game loop on top of the chat. Every 45 seconds of chat earns tokens; logging in daily earns 25; inviting friends and creator clips earn more. Tokens open Mystery Boxes, which drop crowns, Plus passes and real-world prizes including gift cards (the page shows examples up to $500). The important detail is in their own FAQ: nobody can buy tokens. They're earned, and Plus plans only include a one-time bonus drop. That keeps the loop from becoming pay-to-win, and it also means you can't shortcut it with a card.

What Plus costs

The pricing page lists three plans: one week at $7.99, one month at $19.99, and six months at $14.99 per month billed as $89.94 every six months. The same page describes a $7.99 trial week that renews at $29.99 a month, so read the plan you're actually clicking before you confirm. Plus adds the controls: pick the gender and country of the people you meet, remove ads, and get up to 5,000 bonus tokens on day one. Cancel anytime, and cancelling never touches your tokens.

Age and moderation

The privacy policy is explicit that the service is not intended for anyone under 18 and that data from under-18s is deleted if discovered. Moderation is described as automated tools supporting community guidelines, with the shield icon as your own control. It doesn't publish a moderation team size or response time.

Who runs it

The privacy policy names Social Media Ventures LLC as the company. Terms were last updated August 16, 2026; the privacy policy January 9, 2026. Shagle's legal pages name the same company, which tells you the two sites are siblings.

Chatspin against the alternatives

If you want to pay a small amount to choose who you meet, Chatspin is the cleanest option in this list, and the free tier is generous. If you'd rather never pay and don't care about filters, OmeTV or Camsurf. If you want heavier moderation with a photo step, Chatroulette.

Verdict

Chatspin is the best of the pay-for-filters options: the free tier is complete, masks are free, and Plus is cheap enough to try for a week. The one thing to watch is the renewal price on the trial. If you never want to pay and don't need filters, OmeTV or Camsurf do the same core job for nothing.
